About Sappadu

Sappadu (சாப்பாடு) is the traditional Tamil multi-course vegetarian meal served on a fresh banana leaf. It is the standard wedding catering for Tamil Brahmin weddings and most South Indian community feasts.

A traditional sappadu menu includes:

  • Rice served with various dals and curries: sambar, rasam, kootu, kuzhambu
  • Vegetables (poriyal — dry sabzi, kootu — semi-dry)
  • Pickles + papadum
  • Sweets (2-3 varieties): payasam, paruppu vadai, mysore pak
  • Yogurt rice (curd rice) as the final course
  • Banana + betel leaf with areca nut as palate cleanser

Cooking is strictly vegetarian, often without onion + garlic for Brahmin sappadu. Filter coffee is served separately, often unlimited.

Sappadu per-plate ranges: ₹500-1,500 for traditional kalyana mandapam sappadu, ₹1,200-2,500 for modern multi-cuisine sappadu with live counters.
