About Walima

Walima is the Islamic wedding reception, traditionally hosted by the groom's family the day after the Nikah. It is a Sunnah (recommended practice) — the Prophet Muhammad emphasized hosting a walima to publicly celebrate the marriage.

Walima characteristics:

  • Large guest count (200-2,000+) — extended family, friends, community
  • Hyderabadi/Lucknowi/Mughlai catering — biryani, haleem, kebabs, kurma, shahi tukda
  • Halal-certified kitchen required
  • Optional gender-separated seating in traditional families
  • Stage for the couple to receive guests
  • No alcohol — traditional Muslim weddings are dry events

Hyderabad has the strongest walima venue infrastructure in India — banquet halls in Old City, Tolichowki, and Mehdipatnam specialize in halal multi-cuisine catering. Premium walimas at Falaknuma Palace, ITC Kakatiya, or Park Hyatt reach ₹50 lakh – ₹2 crore.
